Special Weather Statement issued July 11 at 2:03PM CDT by NWS New Orleans LA At 203 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts over marine areas along a line extending from near Lutcher to near Laplace. Movement was northwest at 20 mph. HAZARD...Waterspouts and winds in excess of 40 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous waters. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Reserve, Laplace, Lutcher, Sorrento, French Settlement, Port Vincent, Springfield, Whitehall, Garyville, and Killian. This includes the following Interstates... Interstate 10 in Louisiana between mile markers 187 and 209. Interstate 55 in Louisiana between mile markers 1 and 13. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. To report severe weather, contact your nearest law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the National Weather Service office in New Orleans. If on or near marine areas, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
