The Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9, is in force. This means that winds are expected to increase significantly as Noul moves closer to Hong Kong. At 4 a.m., Severe Typhoon Noul was centred about 80 kilometres east-northeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.6 degrees north 114.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the coast of eastern Guangdong. Locally, gales are affecting many places with occasional storm force winds offshore and over high ground. Heavy squally showers associated with Noul are affecting Hong Kong. Noul has made landfall over Huidong, Huizhou City, and is skirting within 100 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong. Depending on the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need of issuing the Hurricane Signal, No. 10. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal, No. 9 or above is expected to remain in force at least until 7 a.m. today. Members of the public please pay attention to the latest weather information issued by the Observatory. In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Cheung Chau and Waglan Island were 97, 93 and 86 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 130, 131 and 106 kilometres per hour respectively. 1.
