The Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9, is in force. Severe Typhoon Noul has weakened into a typhoon. At 6 a.m., Noul was centred about 80 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.8 degrees north 114.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour crossing inland Guangdong. Locally, gales are affecting many places with occasional storm force winds offshore and over high ground. Heavy squally showers associated with Noul are affecting Hong Kong. In the past hour, around 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over eastern part of the New Territories. Noul is moving northwestward steadily, skirting about 80 kilometres to the northeast of the territory. With Noul moving into inland Guangdong and weakening progressively, the Observatory will issue the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 at 7:10 a.m. Local winds are expected to become southwesterlies gradually. Areas which were previously sheltered may become exposed. Seas will be high with swells. Members of the public should remain on the alert. In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau, Lau Fau Shan and Chek Lap Kok were 88, 83 and 66 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 116, 113 and 85 kilometres per hour respectively. 1.
